Attn 4th & 5th Grade Squirrels: Global Reading Challenge 2019

I am writing to you today to tell you about an exciting reading competition sponsored by the Seattle Public Library called the Global Reading Challenge (GRC).

In this program 4th and 5th grade students read from selected book titles and compete against each other in a team format by answering literal questions about the books they have read. The winning Sand Point team advances to a semifinal against other Seattle School District schools and possibly to a citywide championship in the spring.

I want to inform you about the program and invite you to encourage your student to participate if s/he is so inclined. I should note here that participation is optional.

There are a total of 10 books in the competition. Fifth grade students who choose to participate are encouraged to read at least 5 of the books. Grade 4 students are encouraged to read at least 4. Many students read more and some even read all 10.

Students in grades 4 and 5 are being given information about the program this week and are encouraged to sign up if interested. Sign-ups will continue through the first week in December.

Since this program is sponsored by SPL the books are chosen by them. Please note that some of the subject matter in the books may be slightly sophisticated for some students and they may need some parent support.
