SPE PTA was successful in implementing Phase 1 of our playground and garden improvement project! Over the course of the 2011-2012 school year we raised over $30k and won a City of Seattle Department of Neighborhoods (DoN) Small Projects matching grant (up to $25k) to design and install an array of new play structures in our existing play area in the back of the school. Overseeing the fundraising, design, contracting, coordination with the Seattle School District, and project management process was a team of committed SPE parents and staff including, Karen Chase, Julie Hampden, Juli Horan, and Dan Warren. In addition, there were numerous (20+) school and community volunteers, including over 10 volunteers from Windermere Real Estate, that showed up to help with the following steps of the process: one full day of site prep, two full days of equipment installation, and two half-days of site clean-up. And finally, LASER summer camp kids completed one last important clean-up step, by finding and removing gravel from the wood chips in a fast and furious rock scavenger hunt.

During the 2013-2014 school year, SPE PTA will continue raising funds for Phase 2 of the playground and garden improvement project, which will allow for an expansion of the play area, and installation of additional play structures in the enlarged play area. Funds will also be raised to help fund replacement of the existing retaining wall with a more robust containment structure. To support implementation of Phase 2, SPE PTA will also apply for a second DoN Small Projects matching grant.
